Approximately 35,000 individuals might be affected, alerts the American embassy

A substantial security compromise in the Federal Republic of Somalia's digital visa application system potentially disclosed personal information associated with numerous thousands of individuals, involving US citizens, the American embassy in Somalia has warned.

It said obtained reliable information that "unidentified hackers" breached the Somali government's e-visa platform, likely endangering data from approximately 35,000 applicants.

The compromised files being shared on the internet contain personal identifiers, photographs, birth dates, marriage information, home addresses and email contacts, per a American diplomatic communication published on recently.

"This information compromise is ongoing and potentially disclose any personal data you enter into the application portal," British authorities has similarly alerted travellers.

"Evaluate the dangers before applying for an e-visa necessary for travel to the Somali nation."

Official Reaction

Somali authorities have not commented about the security compromise. Nevertheless authorities has transferred its visa service from the initial application portal to etas.gov.so, without offering an official explanation.

"Although Embassy Mogadishu cannot verify if personal information is included in the security incident, people who have submitted applications for a Somali e-visa may be affected," the US' statement stated.

Geopolitical Impact

The updated visa process mandates every visitor, including those from the autonomous region of the northern territory and the semi-autonomous region of the autonomous state, to request travel visas through digital means.

Opponents claim applicants have experienced extra fees in certain regions, totaling double charges.

Regional Dynamics

The northern territory, which declared independence in the early nineties, governs itself with its own institutions yet hasn't received worldwide acceptance. Somalia asserts that the region remains part of its sovereign territory.

The alleged breach adds to persistent conflicts between Somali federal authorities and Hargeisa regarding authority over national air territory. Although federal authorities re-established complete authority of national aviation space in recent years, northern authorities continues to contest this agreement.

Recent Escalation

The dispute escalated further recently after the northern region's leader the regional leader announced Somaliland would refuse Mogadishu's electronic visa and instructed that carriers must obtain permission from Somaliland officials before entering its airspace.

However leading carriers have chosen not to board passengers without federal visa authorization.

In the latest development, Hargeisa's international relations official Abdirahman Dahir Aadan again insisted that "every person entering the northern territory can acquire entry permission at the point of entry", stating Somalia's e-visa system posed risks and warning that "people's data can fall into radical elements" due to utilizing the system.

Aviation Challenges

The conflict has left some travellers traveling to the northern region stranded at airports after being denied boarding because they didn't have Mogadishu's digital permit.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, the aviation minister, has informed media outlets that the regulations - initially declared in recent months - were implemented on November 10th.

The minister stated companies that ignore would be instructed to change course, and stated several aircraft were previously redirected.

Airspace Control Conflict

Recorded material distributed by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority reportedly displays local air-traffic controllers providing guidance to international pilots - an action hailed internally as a confirmation of the region's independence.

However the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority insists it maintains sole administrative and legal control regarding the federal aviation control area (Flight Information Region), which covers the whole nation's airspace. Authorities have instructed every plane to pay no attention to any instructions issued by authorities other than federal authorities.

Officials cautioned that ignoring national and worldwide air transport standards could create safety risks and lead to "significant legal repercussions".
