We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.
The narrative starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
