Seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
