No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
