Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
