European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
