The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
