The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. A Season Unraveling?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio became as messy on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback
At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Finding His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities.
