The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
